GEORGE TOWN: An enterprising used-car dealer is offering a “buy one, get one free” package in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

He is giving away a pre-owned Proton Iswara or Perodua Kancil with every purchase of a luxury car worth over RM100,000.

The Sport Rim Auto spokesman, who did not want to be named, claimed that his was the first used-car dealership in the country to offer such a package.

“We pride ourselves in being a ‘car supermarket’ since we are the biggest used-car dealer in the north.

“Our company has been around for about 20 years. That’s why we can afford to have this promotion,” he said.

The spokesman added that many new user-car dealers mushroomed last year despite the sluggish economy and they had to keep ahead of the competition.

“So we have come up with this offer – it is no different from AirAsia’s novel low-fare campaign,” he said, adding that the promotion was only for this month.

He said to date, they had sold three BMWs.

“The response has been good because buyers also receive free insurance coverage for the first year,” he said.

Buyers who do not want the free cars will be given a discount in lieu, he added.

Govt scraps plan for mandatory vehicle checks

Good news for pensioners. You don't need to go for mandatory checks for your old car and you can still use it after 15 years. Hope that it is still in good shape.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has agreed to pull back the introduction of an “end of life” policy for vehicles after taking into account views and feedback from the people.

Since the announcement of the plan, the Government has been receiving many complaints from the people who were generally not agreeable to the mandatory annual comprehensive inspection as a requirement for road tax renewal for vehicles aged 15 years or older, a statement from the International Trade and Industry Ministry said Friday.

On Oct 28, the ministry had announced the new National Automotive Policy (NAP) which included the “Vehicle End Of Life Policy” which would have seen the introduction of a mandatory annual check-up of cars 15-years and above as a requirement for road tax renewal. -- Bernama

Local university in world solar car race

At least we are doing something....

KUALA LUMPUR: It is not the home bred F1 team that the country has recently announced but a 16-member Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) team is spearheading Malaysia's challenge in a solar car race in Australia next week.

The team left for Australia on Sunday to compete in the 2009 World Solar Challenge from Oct 25 to 31.

The team - known as "Solar Ranger" - is led by the university's vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mashkuri Yaacob.

Uniten's developed solar car, "Solar Ranger 1", bearing the 1Malaysia logo, was flown to Darwin on Oct 8 ahead of the race, which covers a distance of 3,021km between Darwin in the Northern Territory and Adelaide in South Australia.

Uniten said the car took two years to complete and underwent a series of test drives from April this year.

Team manager, Associate Prof Halil Hussain said the race, which is aimed at promoting sustainable energy, would be the university's first after winning the World Solar Cycle Challenge six years ago.

He said the team aimed to finish among the top ten. - Bernama

Remote starters are always a popular holiday gift in Northern climes, so particularly lazy shoppers will be heartened to learn one can be downloaded on iTunes.

The Viper SmartStart from Directed Electronics is an iPhone-compatible remote starter capable of warming up or cooling down a car. Even if you’re not a fan of letting your car idle in a parking lot, Viper says the SmartStart could come in handy for remotely locking or unlocking the doors, popping the trunk or even sounding the car alarm.

Best of all, instead of pointing a squared-off keyfob at a car that’s parked a mere 30 feet away, you can start your car from anywhere provided there’s a cell phone signal.

“Our customers have consistently told us that the two most important features in a remote starter are range and user interface,” Directed Electronics president Kevin Duffy said in a statement. “We developed the Viper SmartStart in response. Range is virtually unlimited, and iPhone owners can use the elegant touch-screen interface they already carry in their pocket.”

The SmartStart can either be installed separately for $499 or mated to an existing remote starter for $299. There’s also an annual service charge, which tacks on an additional $29.99 a year. The system is also compatible with the iPod Touch, but its range is limited to within existing WiFi networks.
