Samsung's iPad?

Seems that now everyone wants to make their own iPad and Samsung has their own answer in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Tab,

At least we have some alternatives and can compare how good the iPad is with its competitors.

Samsung pits its Galaxy against the iPad

BERLIN: Samsung Electronics Co unveiled a new tablet PC named Galaxy Tab as the latest device meant to rival Apple Inc's popular iPad.

The device offers users "a new galaxy of possibilities" with features such as mobile video conferencing and a video chat function, Samsung Europe telecom executive Thomas Richter said at Berlin's IFA consumer electronics fair.

The thin tablet device weighs 13.4oz (380g) and has a 7in (18cm) touchscreen, making it about three times that of an Apple iPhone, but roughly a third smaller than an iPad.

Richter said it comes with Google Inc's Android 2.2 operating system, which can run HTML5 and Adobe's Flash Player - unlike the iPad.

The Galaxy will allow users to browse the Web and check e-mail just as on a regular PC, Richter said.

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been designed to enable consumers to maximise their online experience wherever that may be," the head of Samsung's mobile communications business, J.K. Shin, said.

The price of the device will depend on telecommunications operators through which it will be available starting next month in Europe and later in fall in the United States and Asia, Samsung said.

The device supports Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G cellphone networks, making it a combination of smartphone and laptop. It "turns out to be a perfect speakerphone on the desk, or a mobile phone on the move via Bluetooth headset," Samsung said.

The Tablet PC also comes with two cameras, one 3-megabyte digital camera with a flash on the back of the device, and a second camera on the front for video conferences - a feature the iPad lacks, but other competitors such as Dell's Streak Tablet PC also offers.

The company said that the device's battery would support more than eight hours of continuous multimedia usage, or seven hours of video play.

The tablet also comes with Swype, a third-party application already found on Samsung's Galaxy 5 series phone and available for some other Android-based handsets, which allows users to type on virtual keyboards by simply swiping fingers around from one letter to the next, lifting only between words.

The application then uses an algorithm to determine the word that is intended, which the company says allows for typing speeds of more than 40 words per minute.

Commercial success of the device will be crucial for the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, flatscreen TVs and liquid-crystal displays.

Samsung's quarterly profit surged by 83% to a record high of 4.28 trillion South Korean won (RM11.5bil) in the second quarter ended June 30, but the company warned that intensifying competition in areas like mobile phones could dent earnings in coming quarters.

Malaysia's iPad?!

Seems that ever since the iPad emerged there seems to be many people wanting to create something similiar.

Malaysian company CSL will manufacture JooJoo and sell it at USD 499 (same as the iPad) when it's out.

JooJoo will be manufactured by Malaysia’s CSL Group

Mobile handset manufacturer CSL Group is unheard of here, but in Southeast Asia it claims to sell more handsets than anyone besides Nokia. CSL stands for “Commitment Service Loyalty,” and Malaysians buy a lot of CSL’s flagrantly-named Blueberry smartphones.

They’re more than big enough to handle manufacturing of Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet computer, which began life as TechCrunch founder Mike Arrington’s CrunchPad. Compared to Apple’s iPad tablet, the JooJoo has a much larger screen that also boasts widescreen movie resolution, and much simpler software than Apple’s gesture-driven applications. On the JooJoo, everything is done in a browser window. There are no downloadable apps. Unlike the iPad, it eagerly supports Flash animation in Web pages.

Let’s be clear: The JooJoo will be built across the ocean, but it’s target market is very much the United States of America, where people blow $500 on a Kindle.

JooJoo’s maker, Fusion Garage, began taking orders for the $499 units — same price as an entry-level Apple iPad — in mid-December, with a promise to ship in “8-10 weeks.” It looks like the deal with CSL will enable that to happen. In a phone interview Sunday, Fusion Garage CEO Chandrasekar “Chandra” Rathakrishnan pledged that the first JooJoos will be in customers’ hands before the end of February.

The arrangement between Fusion Garage and CSL Group, Rathakrishnan told me, removes all of Fusion Garage’s upfront costs of manufacturing, in exchange for a royalty that CSL will receive on each JooJoo tablet sold.

I’ve followed the JooJoo story avidly because it’s a real-life example of the stuff Wired magazine talks about nowadays: Anyone with an idea can get a product built and sold by outsourcing everything but the idea itself.

In the case of the JooJoo, Arrington has filed a lawsuit claiming that Fusion Garage, the 13-person Singapore company that built the first prototype CrunchPads, stole his idea and renamed it JooJoo so they could sell it themselves and cut him out of the picture except as a product evangelist.

Lawsuits are boring, but the fact that one guy’s blog post can turn into a mass-market product that challenges Apple and Amazon is pretty cool.

Update: Fusion Garage has put out a press release about their partnership with CSL.

Chinese iPad?!

China seems to have released the"iPad", 6 months before it is released and sells at USD 525!

chineseipad.jpg

Give it up to the Chinese for being quick on their feet. This P88, looks like a giant iPhone, and it has already been in manufacturing for six months already. Did Apple copy the P88?

The P88 has a resistive screen, has a 250GB hard drive, an ethernet port, a webcam, and run Windows. It also gets an hour and a half of battery life, and costs, $525. Still! The intellectual property of Shenzhen Great Loong Brother will not be wrongly appropriated! At least, not if SGLB president Xiaolong Wu has anything to say about it:

We are considering legal action, but we can not do much in the United States. But if Apple brings the iPad to China, we will be forced to denounce them, because it will certainly affect our sales.

It sounds so much better than the iPad considering having a webcam on its own is already a plus point. [El Mundo via Wired]

iPad Unveiled

Apple unveils the iPad which looks like an oversized iPhone but with much more features.

Apple shows off the iPad at last

UNVEILED: Jobs showing off the new iPad during an Apple event in San Francisco yesterday. — AP

By CHONG JINN XIUNG intech@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: After weeks of speculation and anticipation by consumers and industry pundits, the worldwide wait ended when Apple chief executive Steve Jobs finally unveiled the iPad tablet computer in San Francisco yesterday.

The iPad is all that everyone has been anticipating it to be — a large-form tablet that is only 0.5in thick and weighs just 680g.

It features a big 9.7in LED backlit display (1,024 x 768-pixels) with multitouch capabilities and has a built-in accelerometer that allows the device to adjust the screen orientation either in portrait or landscape mode depending how the device is held.

The device runs on a custom 1GHz Apple A4 processor chip that handles both processing and graphics performance. It is also fully network capable with 802.11n WiFi and 3G connectivity.

It will ship with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of Flash memory. Apple claims the device has up to 10 hours of battery life and that it can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

Interestingly the iPad syncs with a Mac or PC over the same 30-pin sync cable that the iPhone uses, so it can sync all your photos, music, videos and applications in the same manner.

Apple also said that all applications and files from the App Store, iTunes store and the newly announced iBookstore will automatically sync to a user’s iTunes library.

The iPad doesn’t completely overhaul the iPhone’s touch-driven interface. It is still very much a touch-driven experience so just about anyone who’s used an iPhone will immediately be familiar with the iPad’s interface.

The works

Like a Swiss army knife, the device has a long list of functions that include web surfing, gaming, and reading e-books.

Confident in its web surfing capabilities, Jobs said web browsing on the iPad is like holding the Internet in the palm of your hands.

Users can browse entire webpages using Apple’s Safari browser on the iPad and employ the same finger gestures used on the iPhone to scroll up and down, or flick pictures and pages.

Leveraging on Apple’s large collection of existing applications, the iPad can readily run any native iPhone application from the App Store. The iPad can run them either in their native resolution of 320 x 480-pixels or scale up them up to fit the entire screen.

Apple had several developers to showcase their applications during its press event in San Francisco with Electronic Arts showing off an iPad-optimised Need for Speed: Shift car racing game.

Initial impressions show a rather smooth-running game with high-resolution graphics. Driving the cars in the game is by both touch and motion controls.

Other applications announced for the iPad include a new version of iWorks featuring Pages, Keynote and Numbers that allow users to create text documents, presentations and spreadsheets.

The three applications will be available separately through the App Store for US$9.99 (RM34) each.

March date

Giving the Amazon Kindle a run for its money, the iPad also functions as an e-book reader, courtesy of Apple’s new iBooks application. The iPad will use Apple’s new iBookstore that will feature books from major and independent publishers.

The iPad comes in two versions — one with WiFi and the other with both WiFi and 3G.

It will go on sale in late March, with prices starting at US$499 (RM1,697) for WiFi-only models and up to US$829 (RM2,818) for the WiFi- and 3G-enabled 64GB model.

There was no announcement at the San Francisco event about when the iPad will be available in Malaysia.
